Interview with Yvette Gonzalez on Girl Empowerment-Desiree Alvarado
Desiree:How has Latinas Unidas impacted you? Yvette: Latinas unidas has created a foundation for all women to unite and empower each other by the beauty we all have from within. It has provided experience, and roads to success that give the little push to every little girl needs to succeed. It radiates motivation and optimism that women tend to lack in a male dominated environment. It is...latinas unidas. Desiree: Did our Expo impact you in any way? Yvette: I think the expo motivated my self esteem as a girl on the road to success. Not everybody has the advantage of having an encourage in their life, so this was probably an impact full experience for several girls in the school. Desiree: Do you feel that you have more support than before? Yvette: There has been an increase of support for the girls attending Bassett. More girls including myself don’t feel alone in the process of succeeding high-school and going to college, which is important in a male dominant society. Desiree: Do you feel more prepared for college and your future? Yvette: I feel that there could be more preparation for college. Most of us don’t exactly know what to do, so we turn to our counselors for guidance. However, regarding Latina scholarships is something would touch up on, and encourage us to head towards a 4 year university if possible. Desiree: Is it helpful to have a mentor? Yvette: It is extremely helpful especially since the majority of families didn’t attend college or finish highschool, so the lack of knowledge in what to do is definitely there. A mentor is always encouraging and helpful on figuring out what do do after highschool and also how to do it. |
