Guidelines for College Acceptance

- Involve yourself
- It is a good idea to become involved in extracurricular activities not only in school, but most colleges like to see community service outside of school.
- Create a list of different colleges you might want to apply to
- Engage yourself in school not only to learn but to become familiar with your strongest subjects. Your strong subjects might give you an idea of what colleges you might want to look at if they have a good program for the type of major your subject corresponds to. Consider if you would like to attend a college that is local or out of state and urban or rural.
- Read!
- As much as possible and anything you can that interests you. This will prepare you for college readings and expand your knowledge.
Step 2: Junior Year!
- Prepare from the hectic application season of senior year by narrowing down the list of colleges you would like to apply to.
- If you are taking AP classes make you you do your best in them to save money for colleges.
- In March, you should ask for teacher recommendations
- At the end of junior year, take the SAT and the ACT
- Note that some high schools will give fee waivers to cover two SAT tests.
- It is a good idea to take both the SAT and ACT because you might be advanced in
- In the summer check out college essay application prompts to start thinking of what you would want to include. It's a good idea to start the essays to avoid Senior September Stress and procrastination
- September:
- Start College Application Essays:
- It is a good idea to work on college applications at least 30 minutes daily and make sure that you plan out your essay and think about aspects you wish to include in the essay.
- Make sure to include quality over quantity. If you are extremely involved, to sound sincere and avoid sounding arrogant, it is best to avoid listing every single activity going down to the bottom of the application, it is important to list activities that you are most involved in that you are proud to say you made a difference in.
- In your personal essay, make it interesting by writing about a valuable experience. You make also ask a guardian to read it because they know you most personally.
- Decide which colleges you would like to apply to and focus on colleges that are within reach
- If you haven't by this time, ask for teacher recommendations
- Start College Application Essays:
- October:
- Continue/Finish College applications and have them proofread by teachers and even family members who know you well personally.
- Submit Early Decision applications.
- Take the ACT and/or SAT
- Look for colleges that accept CCS or financial aid profile
- November:
- This is the time to submit college applications
- (Take the SAT and ACT in October/November and remember colleges accept the higher score )
- December
- Continue working hard in school and pushing to your limits, and keep reading!
- January
- College acceptance letters will be coming in. If you are accepted into more than one weigh the pros and cons of attending each college. Don’t turn down a college immediately because it is too expensive because financial aid might cover most of your expenses.
- February-April
- If you are taking any APs make sure that you study and get ready for testing in May.
- May
- AP testing time! Sleep well, eat a good breakfast, and pass those tests! Also be sure to keep pushing hard and finish this semester. Look up which colleges will accept your AP scores as credit!

The Caruso Affiliated Spirit of American Youth Scholarship will be awarded to two graduating high school seniors who attend a public or private school in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys.
Qualifying students will exhibit academic potential, provide examples of how they've contributed to the betterment of their communities, and complete an essay based on how they would invest in their communities to create a brighter future for the next generation.
Coca-Cola Scholarship
- must attend high school in the United States
- NEED: Transcript, school profile (AP classes, service hours, etc), contact info, a list of school and non-school organizations, list of honors and awards, list of volunteer organizations.
